The Votive Monument of Spartans at Acient Delphi Canvas Print

Along the sacred way in Delphi, Greece.

Greek city-states engaged in terrific one-upsmanship when it came to erecting votives to the oracle. For example, in this niche were showcased 37 bronze statues. They celebrated the Spartans' victory over the Athenians at Aegospotamoi in 404 BC, ending the Peloponnesian War and Athens' supremacy among Greek city-states. The monument was purposely erected directly across the Way from the Athenian monument celebrating victory at Marathon, which originally only held 13 statues (although those were made by Pheidias himself!).

I am an I.T. professional and aspiring programmer by day and a passionate photographer by night... and sometimes also by day. I am always on the look out for that scene or object that just might look interesting when extracted/ separated from everything around it. I don't think I've read more fitting words to live by for a photographer than those of Henry David Thoreau: "It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see."
